Built to fish off the Newfoundland coast, the ship soon turned out to be such a fast sailer that she won all the great classical regattas along the USA's Eastern coast. Bluenose II History: Launched in Lunenburg, the schooner Bluenose has a very special place in the history of navigation and yachting. Built to fish off the Newfoundland coast, the ship soon turned out to be such a fast sailer that she won all the great classical regattas along the USA's Eastern coast. The Bluenose was used not only as a racing ship bu as a cod-fishing schooner. The Bluenose was the response to a Nova Scotian defeat in a race for schooners established by the Halifax Herald newspaper in 1920. After fishing season, the Bluenose defeated the ship Elsie from Gloucester, Massachusetts, returning the trophy to Nova Scotia. During the next 17 years, the Bluenose faced no North American challengers. She was built in Nova Scotia on March 26, 1921, and shipwrecked near Haiti in 1946. A true copy - Bluenose II - was launched in 1964.
